monday morning musing: It is Time to Laugh

MUSE UPON THIS:

When was the last time you laughed?

And I mean a from-the-belly, deep guffaw.  Don’t those giggles feel good?  The power of laughter is dramatic. Laughter has been proven to help us feel better both physically and mentally. (Really!  There is actually a science that studies the physiological responses of the body to laughter, gelotology!).  So, when was the last time you laughed? When are we as gloriously joyful as little kids are?  I remember a USA statistic from years ago that said children smile an average of over 300 times a day – adults, 9.  It is time to smile and laugh, everyone!  Enjoy the feel good moments - I have a bevy of funny ones!

Just THINK about smiling...

So, if you have been following the musings for the past couple weeks, I have been reflecting on the power of a smile.  Just smiling or even contracting the muscles in your face will uplift you.

But it gets even BETTER, just bringing on the feeling of a smile makes you feel better.  While I am unaware of any research here, try it.  Pretend you are about to smile.  Feel better?  This smiling is some powerful stuff!

Just contract the muscles

Okay, to continue from last week's musing...it gets even better.  Did you know that simply contracting the muscles in your face that create a smile makes you feel better?  (And this is proven by research.  Read Malcolm Gladwell's book, Blink.)  Try it...you feel better, don't you?  Seriously, smiling is powerful!

So, on that note, I have another Feel Good Moment to leave you amused!  In fact, I have two.  I found these two this past week.  One of them is 9 minutes -- worth all 9!  The second one is a bit raw, but the humor is my humor so I hope you enjoy it too.  Enjoy!

Smile!

Yep, that's it.  So simple and so powerful.  Did you know smiling boosts your immune system, lowers high blood pressure, and releases serotonin, endorphins and natural pain killers? (I knew laughter did.  I wrote about it here.  Didn't realize a simple smile could do the same!  Amazing!)  According to research done by the British Dental Health Foundation, smiling gives you the same level of stimilation as eating 2,000 chocolate bars!  (Love that one!)  You know, I must admit I did not check my sources on this one.  Frankly, I don’t care if this is “scientifically proven”.  Here’s where anecdotal evidence serves me perfectly well.  I feel better when I smile...don’t you? 

So, here's your assignment, smile, right now.  I have a few Feel Good moments to help you with that if your smile isn't easily forthcoming.  Then, pass it on.  Smile at someone, anyone.  My favorite is to simply smile at anyone and everyone, especially drivers driving by.  My smile almost always makes them smile and I know I have uplifted their day.

Joy is contagious

I had a simply delightful yoga class last week.  One of my students came in in a giggly, joyful mood.  She had tears running down her face as she tried to tell us a story that had amused her.  We hadn't even started class before we were all drawn into her joy.  During the entire class we kept bursting into fits of laughter over the simplest comments.  It felt wonderful!  Everyone commented about how incredibly peaceful her Savasana (Relaxation) was and I have heard from a few that they also slept more soundly than ever (including me!)  Laughter is a powerful release and it is so contagious!  Our moods are contagious.  What are you spreading with your mood today?

Remember giggling that hard when you were young?  (It wasn't just any milk for me, it was chocolate milk!)  when was the last time you laughed that hard?  Here are just a few of the benefits of laughter I found on the internet:

• Laughter relaxes the whole body: A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.
• Laughter boosts the immune system: Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.
• Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals.  Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.
• Laughter protects the heart: Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.

Sounds good, doesn't it?  Plus, it is infectious!  Here we are worried about spreading the flu...how about focusing on spreading joy?
