These points are part of a 8-hour workshop I teach on moving the spine safely. Obviously this is just a snippet of what I teach! :-) Let me know if you have questions!
- Move spine as a unit:
- Pelvis is part of torso, not legs: Think about how often we divide them up. We round as we forward fold, leave the pelvis behind. We back bend from the lower back, leaving the pelvis behind. What about twists? When we leave the pelvis behind as we twist, the sacro-iliac joint suffers.
- Neck is part of spine: do you ever lead your forward folds with your chin?
- Encourage movement at each joint -- especially thoracic where movement is limited and we tend to be rigid: Use this concept in backbends and twists...powerful. We will be experimenting with various ways of feeling more movement in the spine.
- Use the correct muscles for the work: Backbends are big ones for this section. We use our glutes to elongate the lower back, causing congestion in the lower back and sacro-iliac joint.
- Elongation – Extending through the spine before moving: do you know you can actually encourage discs to move BACK into place by elongating? Elongation fits into many categories.
